Dental sedation in Costa Rica
Make room for dental care, even when you feel anxious
If anxiety has kept you from booking a visit, let's talk. Sedation may improve comfort during selected procedures after reviewing your health and the level of care you need.

We discuss your concerns and options for a more manageable visit.
Selection considers the procedure, medical history and medication.
You receive instructions for the appointment, an escort and recovery.
What is dental sedation?
Sedation uses medication to help you relax during care. It is considered in relation to anxiety, the procedure and your health. Not everyone needs sedation, and not every technique suits every patient.
Sedation and local anesthesia have different roles
Local anesthesia numbs the area being treated to control pain and may be used alongside sedation. Conscious sedation preserves the ability to respond; it is not the same as general anesthesia.
Assessment determines the approach and team
There are different ways to administer sedation and different levels of effect. Your consultation should confirm the available and appropriate option, responsible professional, planned monitoring and care setting. This general information does not mean every method is offered at every appointment.
Before scheduling, share medical conditions, allergies, medicines, supplements and previous experiences with anesthesia or sedation. Mention sleep apnea, breathing problems or possible pregnancy.
You can also discuss breaks, explanations in stages and other ways to help you manage the visit. An initial appointment can focus on understanding your needs even if you have not decided to start treatment.
Preparing for your appointment
- Initial discussion: describe situations that trigger fear and relevant past experiences.
- Assessment: review of your health history and the proposed procedure.
- Agreed plan: explanation of benefits, risks, alternatives and consent.
- Written instructions: guidance on food or fasting, medication, an escort and transport for the selected technique.
- Care and recovery: monitoring and discharge based on the team’s assessment, with instructions for home.
Do not take sedatives on your own or stop regular medication without instructions. Ask before your appointment if anything is unclear or your health has changed.
Recovery and possible effects
Depending on the technique, effects may include drowsiness, dizziness or nausea. Breathing problems and medication reactions are also possible. Assessment, monitoring and recovery instructions are therefore part of the treatment.
Arrange the recommended escort. Do not drive, operate machinery or make important decisions during the period specified by your team. Returning to work and daily activities depends on both sedation and the dental procedure.
Ask for a contact for concerns after discharge. Seek emergency care if someone has difficulty breathing or cannot be awakened normally.
What to confirm before booking
Ask for the dental procedure and sedation to be itemized separately, including prior assessment, responsible professional, estimated duration, monitoring and recovery. Discuss what happens if treatment takes longer or needs rescheduling.
If you are traveling, confirm escort requirements, transport and the appointment schedule before booking. Do not assume you can drive or return to work immediately afterward.
Frequently asked questions
Will I be fully asleep?
Not necessarily. This depends on the level and technique. Ask for a specific explanation of the approach proposed for you.
Does sedation replace local anesthesia?
No. Anxiety relief and pain control are planned separately and can be combined.
Can I ask about sedation for implants?
Yes, during an evaluation for implants or All-on-X. Suitability requires assessment and is not decided solely by the procedure’s name.
Can my first visit just be a conversation?
Yes. Contact us to arrange an evaluation and explain what would help you feel more comfortable.
